Strong growth in domestic demand for bicycles are expected in Philippine!

The Department of the Ministry of Trade and Industry expects a very strong growth in domestic demand for bicycles. This will be the result of new road regulations on the protection of cyclists that will soon pass Congress. According to Ceferino Rodolfo: “we have good indications these new road regulations will result in a growing demand for bicycles so we can reposition production towards the domestic market.”

Prior to this, Philippine Senator Pia Cayetano filed a bill named ‘Safe Pathways Act’. This bill proposes “the creation of a network of bicycle lanes and additional pathways to get people safely to essential destinations in times of emergency,” the Manila Standard reports. The Philippines has seen a rise in the number of natural disasters in the past years. Due to climate change more and more typhoons are hitting the country any time of the year. Moreover, there is a continuous fear for volcanic eruptions. In case of emergency people get stuck on the existing (car) road infrastructure that is already congested on a normal day. nAccording to Rodolfo, “the new bill would not only promote healthy living with the proposed creation of bicycle lanes, but also attract investments of bicycle and cycling related companies. We hope to find more parties interested to invest in a sustainable bicycle market in the Philippines.”
